Hollywood's Hottest Hunks Through The Years

Where would the movie industry be without the Hollywood hunk? Ever since the very first films, people have queued around the block to see the most attractive men on the big screen. We love them for not only their good looks, but their charisma and their talent as well. Here’s a list of 40 of the hottest men from every era of Tinseltown.

1. Clark Gable

Clark Gable was, to put it simply, one of the biggest movie stars who has ever lit up our screens. You may have seen him in Gone with the Wind, or his last movie, The Misfits.

Doris Day reportedly once said of him, “He was as masculine as any man I’ve ever known, and as much a little boy as a grown man could be — it was this combination that had such a devastating effect on women.”

2. Cary Grant

Cary Grant was born under the unassuming name of Archibald Leach, and he had a very humble childhood. But he also had good looks, and as he grew up he was able to use them to his advantage in the entertainment industry.

Grant passed away in 1986 leaving an incredible legacy behind him. He had been nominated for multiple awards, won a Kennedy Center Honor, and made his mark as one of the biggest stars to ever conquer Hollywood.

3. Humphrey Bogart

Humphrey Bogart began his career on Broadway before becoming a film noir star. To this day, his face might be the first one you think of when you picture a detective from this genre.

On the set of the 1944 movie To Have and Have Not Bogart fell in love with Lauren Bacall, a woman over 20 years his junior, and they ended up getting married. But his being tied down didn’t stop women the world over lusting for Bogart.

4. Marlon Brando

Regardless of whether or not he’d been handsome, Marlon Brando would surely have been remembered as one of the greatest actors of all time… but the good looks certainly didn’t hurt!

Brando’s career took a bit of a downturn in his later years. He put on weight from the stress of life in the spotlight, and he began to act erratically. That didn’t tarnish his legacy as a tremendous actor, though.

5. Paul Newman

Paul Newman had the brightest blue eyes in Hollywood and stunning good looks, but he was insecure about them, according to a memoir released in 2022. He felt his attractiveness overshadowed his talent.

“You work what you consider pretty hard at your craft, and you’re getting to the point where you’re just starting to feel kind of good about yourself, and then somebody says, ‘Oh, God, take off your sunglasses so I can see your baby-blue eyes!’” he wrote in Paul Newman: The Extraordinary Life of an Ordinary Man.

6. James Dean

James Dean had it all: he was talented, he was charismatic, and he was extremely good-looking. By the time he was 24 he’d already put in iconic performances in the movies Rebel Without a Cause, East of Eden and Giant.

So that makes it all the more unfair that he didn’t live to be 25. He died in a terrible car accident in September 1955; many thousands of fans gathered to say goodbye to him at his funeral.

7. Rock Hudson

Rock Hudson presented himself as a ladies’ man and he was very good at inhabiting that persona. But in truth, he was gay at a time when homosexuality was not accepted in Hollywood. Tragically, he spent most of his life hiding.

And even more tragically, he passed away from AIDS. He was outed by journalists before he died and for a long time his talents were forgotten about as people focused on his struggle. But he was undeniably a very talented actor.

8. Tony Curtis

During the 1950s Tony Curtis was one of the biggest stars in the world. He appeared in The Defiant Ones and Some Like It Hot, among other hits. He was a true heartthrob of his era.

But unfortunately, once that era ended he faded into almost a kind of obscurity. He was, though, notable for marrying six times, and he’s actually the father of contemporary actress Jamie Lee Curtis.

9. Sidney Poitier

Sidney Poitier succeeded as a Black actor during a time when prejudice was high, and roles were scarce. In the 1950s he broke down a barrier by becoming the first African-American to win a Best Actor Oscar nomination.

He also went one better: he was the first Black actor to win the Academy Award for Best Actor, too. Poitier had a long career and he lived to the impressive age of 94. When he eventually passed away in January 2022 he left behind a legacy of acting, directing, and trailblazing.

10. Elvis Presley

Elvis was perhaps the heartthrob to end all heartthrobs. Almost everyone in the world has heard of The King, and there was once a time when his poster adorned the bedroom wall of virtually every teenage girl.

Elvis’ personal life and marriage to Priscilla Beaulieu has been closely scrutinized in more recent years: after all, she had only been 14 years old when the couple tied the knot. But there’s no doubt he’ll always be a pop-culture icon.

11. Sean Connery

The name’s Bond… James Bond. The man who first brought the world’s most famous spy to life was Sir Sean Connery, and he played the role from 1962 to 1983. For a lot of people, his portrayal remains the yardstick by which all the other Bonds who’ve followed are measured.

And he was also very much a sex symbol, both in his performances as Ian Fleming’s secret agent and his many other cinematic roles. In 1989 People magazine named him the “Sexiest Man Alive”, and ten years later, the “Sexiest Man of the Century.

12. Steve McQueen

Steve McQueen was such an effortlessly cool guy. He was allegedly hard to work with, but that didn’t stop him racking up role after role and pulling in massive crowds at the theaters.

He was also a charitable man, albeit in an unorthodox way. McQueen used to demand free items from movie sets and then he’d send them all to a reformatory school which he had attended during his youth.

13. Robert Redford

Robert Redford has done it all: he’s been a sex symbol, an Oscar-winning actor, and he was even named as one of Time’s most influential people in the world in 2014. And he’s still alive to enjoy all of these accolades!

Esquire magazine asked him in 2017 how he would like to be remembered, and he answered, “I’m just looking at the work, the pleasure of being able to do the work. And that's what the fun is: to climb up the mountain is the fun, not standing at the top.”

14. Clint Eastwood

Clint Eastwood’s performance as the Man with No Name in Sergio Leone’s spaghetti Westerns helped to make him an iconic figure, and after that he became the epitome of hard-bitten masculinity for a lot of people.

As well as enjoying decades of movie hits both in front of the cameras and standing behind them as a director, Eastwood has got into politics in his later years. He was actually mayor of Carmel-by-the-Sea in California for two years. He’s in his 90s now and still active.

15. Alain Delon

French actor Alain Delon was a major sex symbol from the 1960s to the 1980s. He was huge in his native France, but fate decreed that he would never quite be able to break into that all-important US market.

His French accent got in the way of his playing American roles and eventually he simply returned to Europe. Of course, the irony is that these days, with his young and beautiful looks, he would probably have made it in America no problem.

16. Warren Beatty

Warren Beatty was the bad boy of Hollywood for a long time. Women wanted him; men wanted to be him. Carly Simon’s song “You’re So Vain” was even apparently written about him. But his life as a lothario has seemingly all changed now.

Having been romantically linked to well over 100 women, Beatty finally settled down with actress Annette Bening. The couple tied the knot in 1992 and they are still together to this day.

17. Michael Caine

Michael Caine is one of the most celebrated figures in British film. He boasts an incredible filmography, putting in iconic performances in movies including Alfie, The Cider House Rules, The Muppet Christmas Carol and many, many more.

Younger moviegoers will perhaps know him best for his performances as Batman’s faithful butler Alfred in Christopher Nolan’s Batman movie trilogy. He’s hung up his acting boots now: rather fittingly, his last film in 2023 was titled The Great Escaper. But who knows? Perhaps he’ll be persuaded to come out of retirement one day.

18. James Caan

James Caan was both a leading man and a ladies’ man. In fact, he was well-known for his voracious appetite for beautiful women. “To get over my divorce,” he in 2003 told Esquire, “I got a prescription to live at the Playboy Mansion for a while.”

But away from his notorious series of sexual conquests, Caan was best-known for his role as Sonny Corleone in The Godfather. In 2022 when the esteemed actor passed away, that performance was mentioned above all others in his obituaries.

19. Robert De Niro

Robert De Niro is one of the greatest actors alive in the world today. A glance at a filmography which includes titles such as Taxi Driver, Goodfellas, Raging Bull, and The Godfather would tell you that.

And while he’s perhaps most famous for playing hard men, he’s been known to take on comedic roles as well. Away from the silver screen, over the years he’s been married twice and he’s had seven children, too. The last one was with his new partner, Tiffany Chen, whom he met in the 2020s.

20. Harrison Ford

Harrison Ford, the man behind not one but two iconic film characters — Indiana Jones and Han Solo — is still a good-looking guy even though he’s now the wrong side of 80. And he knows it!

Mind you, he can see the funny side of the aging process, too. During a press tour for 2023’s Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, a reporter referred to Ford as “still very hot.” He replied with a laugh, “Look, I have been blessed with this body. Thanks for noticing.”

21. Burt Reynolds

Burt Reynolds was the archetypal “beefcake.” But in addition to that, he was a genuinely talented actor. Just watch him in Deliverance, The Longest Yard, or Smokey and the Bandit.

And he knew full well the women went wild for his trademark mustache. Without it, he joked in 1978 in an interview with The Washington Post, “I look like I make love in the bedroom, and not on the living-room floor.”

22. Richard Gere

For a while, Richard Gere was one half of a power couple to end all power couples. From 1991 to 1995 he was married to supermodel Cindy Crawford, and the world adored them both.

That relationship meant that Richard Gere has been named People’s Sexiest Man Alive twice, technically. In 1993 he and Crawford won “Sexiest Couple” and then Gere won the award solo in 1999; this second accolade was earned when he was 50 years old!

23. Tom Cruise

Tom Cruise began acting in the early ’80s and he rapidly became a huge movie star. His rise to the top was positively meteoric, and judging by the continued success of the Mission: Impossible saga, his star still shows little sign of fading.

His winning smile can be seen in multiple other smash-hit movies across a range of genres, too, including Top Gun and its recent reboot Top Gun: Maverick, Rain Man, Jerry Maguire, A Few Good Men, and The Color of Money.

24. Patrick Swayze

Patrick Swayze arguably had the prettiest face of the ’90s. “He’s one Hollywood hunk whose image has always been greater than the sum of his (sometimes awful) movie parts,” People magazine wrote in 1991 when they named him Sexiest Man Alive.

Sadly, Swayze passed away from pancreatic cancer in 2009, at the age of just 57. Movie fans the world over were devastated, and hundreds of people attended his memorial ceremony in California.

25. Kevin Costner

Kevin Costner has had some ups and downs in his career — take the double-whammy of Waterworld and The Postman, for example — but he’s never lost his good looks.

Costner is in his 60s now but he still looks much younger than he is. The actor, who’s currently enjoying something of a career renaissance thanks to small-screen smash-hit Yellowstone, credits this to workouts, outdoor activities, and simply not being afraid of aging.

26. Pierce Brosnan

Another James Bond! Pierce Brosnan played the character from 1995 to 2002 and there’s no shortage of people out there who think he was the sexiest Bond ever, even eclipsing the great Sean Connery.

Some of that sexiness apparently comes from his devotion to his family. Brosnan was named People’s Sexiest Man Alive in 2001 and his Evelyn co-star Julianna Margulies told the magazine, “When you see a gorgeous man holding hands with his wife and holding his baby, there’s nothing more sexy in the world.”

27. Brad Pitt

Even Brad Pitt’s chaotic love life hasn’t dimmed his sexiness. When he left Jennifer Aniston for Angelina Jolie it caused no end of headlines — and then there was another round of them when Pitt and Jolie divorced acrimoniously.

Brad Pitt was actually the first man to be named People’s Sexiest Man Alive twice, once in 1995 and once in 2000. And let’s not forget his myriad fine acting performances. Highlights include — but are not limited to — 12 Monkeys, Snatch,  Interview With the Vampire, Se7en, and Fight Club.

28. Leonardo DiCaprio

Leonardo DiCaprio won the hearts of women everywhere with his role in Titanic as the ill-fated Jack Dawson. But he was never actually all that comfortable being a sex symbol.

“I was never happy with the teen idol tag at all,” he told Fox News in 2008. “Never wanted to be a sex symbol or all that stuff — it was the work that appealed to me. Really nothing else.”

29. Will Smith

Will Smith has been a famous movie star for decades. He’s had leading roles in Bad Boys, Men in Black, Independence Day, I Am Legend and so many more blockbuster movies. And through it all he seems to have barely aged.

Smith’s relationship with his wife Jada Pinkett-Smith grabs lots of headlines these days, not least thanks to his public assault on Chris Rock at the 2022 Oscars ceremony. But there can be no forgetting just how talented an actor Smith is.

30. Johnny Depp

Johnny Depp is another actor who’s won People’s Sexiest Man Alive twice. He was handed the accolade in 2003 and then again in 2009 when he was at the height of his fame from playing Jack Sparrow in the Pirates of the Caribbean film franchise.

“Johnny Depp has magical powers. He’s unlike anyone else,” actress Isla Fisher said to People in 2009. And then she also rather knowingly quipped, “It’s just a shame he’s so hard on the eyes.”

31. George Clooney

For a long time, the handsome George Clooney was the most eligible bachelor in Hollywood. Then human-rights lawyer Amal Alamuddin came along, and now the pair are one of the most powerful couples in the world.

The Clooneys, as they’re now known, do a lot of activism. But Clooney is still an actor first and foremost and his movies are continually successful. Career highlights include early Tarantino flick From Dusk Till Dawn and more recent offerings including O Brother Where Art Thou?, Syriana, The Monuments Men, and Gravity.

32. Matt Damon

Accomplished actor Matt Damon picked up the People’s Sexiest Man Alive accolade in 2007. Explaining why they’d picked him, People credited his “piercing blue eyes, crooked smile and family-guy demeanor.”

And those things never went away. Matt Damon is still considered one of the most attractive men in Hollywood and he’s dad to three girls plus a stepdaughter. Movies-wise, he’s shown great versatility, nailing roles as varied as an uber-spy in The Bourne Identity and its sequels, and a polymath janitor in Good Will Hunting.

33. Hugh Jackman

Hugh Jackman isn’t only the superhero Wolverine, he’s also a musical star! He saung his heart out in Les Miserables and The Greatest Showman, earning himself an Academy Award nomination for the former.

But never mind his singing prowess: just how did Jackman get those tremendous muscles? The answer is simply lots of incredibly hard work. He gained his Wolverine physique by doing workouts and eating 8,000 calories a day.

34. Ryan Gosling

He’s Kenough! But before Ryan Gosling was Ken to Margot Robbie’s Barbie, he was a heartthrob of Hollywood… even though he didn’t actually believe himself to be attractive at all.

“I’m not that good’looking. I think I’m a pretty weird-looking guy,” he told reporters in 2011. “Every role I got up until The Notebook was the weirdo, freak, psychopath, nerd, outside character guy.” But he did go on to add, “I think things have changed!”

35. Chris Hemsworth

Chris Hemsworth, of course, is the Australian actor who set hearts all a-flutter with his performance as Thor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. And given his success it seems that no-one was ever better cast to play a Norse god!

All that adulation couldn’t fail to escape Hemsworth’s notice: he knew full well that people wanted to look like him. And he was smart enough to exploit the opportunity; in 2019 he launched a fitness app called Centr, and it quickly racked up 1 million downloads.

36. Tom Hardy

Tom Hardy is good-looking, stylish, effortlessly cool, and a good actor. Clearly, some people have all the luck. He’s very self-effacing about his looks, though — to be honest, far more modest than he needs to be.

Pouring cold water on suggestions that he was sex symbol, in 2017 he told the Daily Mail, “I have pencil arms… a healthy layer of dad flab, crooked teeth and bow legs.” These are statements with which few people would agree.

37. Michael B. Jordan

Michael B. Jordan became an actor everyone wanted to see more of after his performance in 2013’s Fruitvale Station. Then came the smash hits Creed and Black Panther, and suddenly he was one of the biggest stars in the world.

He received the Sexiest Man Alive award in 2020 and he seemed pretty excited, telling People, “It’s a good club to be a part of.” And he specifically thanked his family in the same interview, which somehow served to make him all the more sexy.

38. Jeremy Allen White

Jeremy Allen White, who plays Carmy on hit chef show The Bear, is a dazzling man with piercing blue eyes. In the years since his rise to fame he’s become a bona fide sex symbol, but he still claims that he doesn’t quite understand it.

“I feel like I've fooled everybody,” he told NPR in 2023. “I think people are attracted to Carmy. I find his determination attractive. I find his skill, like how good he is at this thing, attractive. And I also, I'll say it, I think chefs are hot.”

39. Paul Mescal

Irish actor Paul Mescal is one of the biggest sex symbols of the 2020s so far, and an immensely talented actor as well. Watch the show Normal People or his debut movie psychological drama The Lost Daughter and you’ll instantly get why he’s so attractive to so many.

His next film performances in 2022’s Aftersun and God's Creatures have garnered well-earned praise, too. But he’s also very, very good at just… wearing clothes. He can make the simplest of white tank tops devastatingly attractive.

40. Jacob Elordi

Jacob Elordi played another heartthrob mentioned above, Elvis, in the 2023 film Priscilla. The director Sofia Coppola told GQ that year that she had cast him as he could seem both “ominous and vulnerable” and because of his “effect on women.”

And what an effect that is! He’s rich and famous already, but Elordi is really still getting started. Who knows quite what great things we might see from this particular Hollywood hunk in the near future?
