The gaming keyboard landscape

There’s no doubt that the gaming keyboard landscape can be a really bewildering world to navigate. There are so many different types, with differing features, sizes, and set-ups. It’s enough to give any gamer a serious headache!

But with the array of choices on the market, there is bound to be a gaming keyboard that ticks all — or at least most — of the boxes for you. Let’s face it, gaming online is hard enough: you really cannot compete without a keyboard that suits your style to a T.

Best overall high-end keyboard: Asus ROG Azoth

If you are an experienced gamer looking for a high-end keyboard, then you likely can’t do much better than the Asus ROG Azoth. A truly beautiful piece of kit that just oozes build quality, the Azoth is one for serious enthusiasts, or perhaps confident beginners with relatively deep pockets.

So, what is so good about it? Well, to start with, the Azoth features a gorgeous OLED display that is built into its sturdy frame. This OLED display is not just pretty, but intuitive and versatile. You can bring up your keyboard settings and system info at a glance, and the former can be quickly altered by a three-way knob.

Not just pretty

Besides the impressive OLED display and the eye-catching fluctuating RGB colors on the keyboard, the Azoth is lovely to type on, whether you’re gaming or working. The gasket-mounted mechanical keyboard is equipped with double-shot PBT keycaps and three layers of foam inside its plastic chassis.

These have the effect of stifling the clicking sound that a regular keyboard produces. The Azoth is wireless with Bluetooth capability and sizewise it follows the 75 percent form factor model. Its NX switches come in in red, brown, and blue, which denote linear, tactile, and clicky settings respectively.

Additional accessories

The Azoth boasts impressive battery life, and when you unbox it, you’ll find a bunch of welcome accessories with it. These include extra switches, keycap and switch pullers, and a DIY lube station to help you fine-tune your keyboard’s sound and feel.

One clear downside, though, is the Armory Crate software that it comes with, some reviewers have characterized as clunky at best. Also, because it is compact by design, there are fewer keys than on numerous other keyboards. Overall, though, the Azoth is a superb gaming keyboard and it’s probably worth shelling out the near-$250 asking price — if you have the means, that is.

Best budget wireless keyboard: Keychron K2 Version 2

If you are on a bit of a tight budget in your search for a gaming keyboard, then you can’t do much better than the excellent Keychron K2 Version 2. This impressive, wallet-friendly keyboard can be secured for around $69 or less.

Perhaps the first thing you will notice about the Keychron K2 Version 2 is its no-frills appearance, and solid overall build. Indeed, this keyboard — with its gray keys and simple white LED lighting — certainly isn’t the sexiest on the market.

Gateron mechanized switches

But what it lacks in aesthetic beauty, the K2’s latest iteration makes up for in impressive features. Yes, the K2 comes equipped with Gateron mechanized switches and wireless connectivity, which is remarkable when you consider the rock-bottom price of this gaming keyboard.

Its wireless connectivity is seamless, and the K2 offers its users both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi options. Then there’s the ability to switch between MacOS and Windows operating systems with relative ease. You can even get 240 hours’ worth of play if you turn the backlights off. Result!

Bang for your buck

The K2 comes with 84 keys with, as noted, white LED backlighting. On the negative side, though, there is no wrist rest. Typing on this keyboard isn’t the smoothest, nor are its switches — which you’d probably expect, given its bargain price.

Overall, though, there’s a lot to like about the K2. You miss out on relatively few features over higher-end models. This budget-friendly keyboard offers a lot of bang for your buck, and is our first choice for gamers who don’t have bottomless pockets but who are still wanting wireless capability.

Best low-profile wireless keyboard: Logitech G915 Lightspeed

If it’s low-profile, wireless gaming that you desire, you can’t say fairer than the Logitech G915 Lightspeed. This slimline keyboard has been around for quite a while on the market, but still offers its users a fine experience.

Yes, it’s a testament to the G915 that it still fares well against newer and fancier models on the market. What’s more, its impressive slim design continues to wow those who purchase and play with it.

Low typing position

The Logitech G915 Lightspeed’s slim design is a major selling point, particularly if you like a low typing position. Devotees really loved how it felt to both type and play, with its neat clicky-switch option and ease of travel across the board. No wrist wrest is included, but that’s is hardly needed due to the low-profile design.

In addition, the G915 offers an impressive battery life and a wireless experience that’s low on lag — the bane of all online gamers. Its RGB LED backlights are decent, if not top of the class, and the low-profile mechanical switches are first-rate.

Dedicated media keys

What else is there to note? Well, the G915 boasts a volume wheel and dedicated media keys, and avid gamers will appreciate the bonus keys on the left-hand side, which can be assigned to shortcuts for certain games.

On the downside, to some tastes the Macro key placement on the G915 is strange and not where you might want it. The battery life could be better too: conceivably you’ll be reaching for the charger more regularly than you might prefer. By some accounts the keys, too, seem to get dirtier than other models. All the same, for a low-profile board, the G915 is hard to beat.

Best mini-keyboard: SteelSeries Apex Pro Mini

If you are scouring the market for a mini-gaming keyboard, chances are you will eventually come across the SteelSeries Apex Pro Mini. Well, take it from us, this is probably the one you should put in your basket, whether that’s online or in store.

Yes, the Apex Pro Mini is a mighty fine and solidly-built piece of kit. It weighs in at an ultra-light 1.34 lbs and shapes up at a super-compact 11.53 x 4.02 x 1.59 inches. This 60 percent mini-gaming keyboard features a lovely and bright backlit RGB per-key array.

Highly customizable

The Apex Pro Mini comes armed with SteelSeries’ signature OmniPoint 2.0 switches, which boast both dual actuation and adjustable actuation. These are brilliant, but one of our favorite things about the keyboard is just how customizable it is.

Of course, given its size, the Apex Pro Mini had to shed a number of regular big-board keys. But worry not, as these functions can be accessed through its secondary key-binds, activated by the SS function key. Those secondary settings can even be remapped to your own preferences, and remarkably each key can even be given its own RGB backlight setting.

“Buggy” software?

Other plus points for the Apex Pro Mini include its general feel, which is highly intuitive and perfect for a prolonged session of Warzone or Destiny. You can’t overlook its basic space-saving and travel-friendly attributes, either.

Still, there has been some criticism on the legends for the secondary key-binds, which unless you are eagle-eyed, can be difficult to read, especially in a darkened room. And SteelSeries’ GG software package has been labeled buggy by some testers. But still bearing that in mind, overall you’ll struggle to find a better mini gaming keyboard than this, particularly a wireless model.

Best mainstream keyboard: HyperX Alloy Origins

Looking for a decent, mainstream gaming keyboard that’ll let you get down to business with a minimum amount of fuss? Then the HyperX Alloy Origins is likely the one for you.

This good-looking keyboard — you’ll love those colorful, customizable RGB key backlights — is well-built and feels relatively compact for a full-size keyboard. There’s a useful rear-height adjustment, too, that has three levels.

Quick and responsive keys

The Alloy Origins utilizes the brand’s own mechanical switches, such as the HyperX Red linear one. Most testers found it to be a smooth gaming keyboard, with quick and responsive keys and minimum feedback coming back at you.

Reportedly not-so-clever is the NGEnuity software that comes with it, which is not super-intuitive, but with a little practice that shouldn’t be too much of a downer. Likewise, the Alloy Origins would probably benefit from some macro keys and dedicated media controls, like many other premium-end gaming set-uos.

Perfect mid-range keyboard

Of course, if you had the money to spare, you would likely opt for one of those higher-end keyboards. But the main plus point about the Alloy Origins is that it is a fine compromise: not too advanced, not too simple.

In other words, it is the perfect mid-ranger for the less discerning shopper, one that will likely serve all but pros’ needs perfectly well. Maybe there will be an update on it soon featuring a USB pass-through port and media control buttons, but for now, the Alloy Origins fits the bill for many just eager to get playing.

Best unlimited funds keyboard: Razer BlackWidow V4 Pro

If you are a gamer for whom money is no object, then firstly, you are very lucky, and secondly we strongly suggest that you splurge your abundant, presumably legitimately earned dollars on the Razer BlackWidow V4 Pro. Unlike the fruits of other impulse driven spending sprees, you won’t regret this purchase.

That’s because the Razer BlackWidow V4 Pro is a stunning full-size gaming keyboard. It has everything you could possibly wish for in such a piece of electronic kit, and likely much more besides. Indeed, the customization options are so abundant it’s almost funny.

Coolest wrist-rest

In terms of that customization, there are eight specific macro keys, four dedicated media keys, and a programmable, multi-function Razer Command Dial. The company suggests the BlackWidow V4 Pro “elevates your entire setup,” and it is bang on with that assertion.

What’s more, the BlackWidow V4 Pro features an 8,000Hz maximum polling rate, and either Razer Green and Razer Yellow switches to best suit your clicky or linear preferences. There’s also a neat volume roller, and perhaps the coolest wrist-rest yet seen, which is detachable but lights up like the keys when you connect it to the keyboard.

Macro keys mess

In terms of downsides, it isn’t easy to find many, the high cost aside. But you might find the fact the macro keys disable themselves by default quite annoying and perplexing. Not only that, it’s sizable so you’ll need a big desk, plus the impressive customization options require the use of extra software.

Razer bills its BlackWidow V4 Pro as “the ultimate mechanical gaming keyboard” for the “next phase of battlestation evolution,” and that’s hard to argue with. So, if you are well-heeled and like the sound of what we have told you, then get your credit or debit card out and splurge your dough on one of the most beautiful gaming keyboards on the market today.

Best full-size budget keyboard: Aukey KM-G17

Imagine paying $60 for a full-size gaming keyboard with RGB lighting behind the keys and dedicated macro ones too. Sounds ridiculous, right? It might, but in reality you can pick up the Aukey KM-G17 for that paltry sum.

Yes, this best budget option is far from cheap and nasty. In fact, the solidly built Aukey KM G-17 boasts an impressive array of features besides those that we’ve already mentioned above. But you’ll particularly like the impressive RGB backlighting down the sides, which makes it appear like a much more expensive array.

On the large side

One thing you will immediately note upon unboxing the KM-G17 is that this mechanical keyboard is rather on the large side. Indeed, it measures 18.1 inches wide, 1.4 inches tall and 7.8 inches deep, which means it dwarfs even most other full-size keyboards.

This isn’t necessarily a negative, depending on your preference. Anyway, that size is increased by the additional keys on the board and a permanently attached palm rest. But getting several media keys, five macros, and a volume knob on a low-end $60 keyboard is quite something.

Plastic chassis

The KM-G17 features the Aukey Blue clicky mechanical switches, and they have an actuation force of 50g. Still, for the low price, you can’t really expect perfection, and there are a few drawbacks. Most notably, you will have to learn to live with that thick, cumbersome USB cable, as it cannot be removed.

The aforementioned palm rest might not be to everyone’s taste either, nor the plastic chassis, nor the ABS keycaps. All the same, the overall KM-G17 package is extremely generous and more than competent given the price. You might even pick it up even cheaper in a sale!

Most beautiful keyboard: Roccat Vulcan II Max

Beauty is famously in the eye of the beholder, but if you were going to pick a keyboard on aesthetics alone, then the Roccat Vulcan II Max would surely get the nod. Yes, this stunning game-station is so attractive when lit up, you might find it difficult to concentrate on gaming and end up just gazing at the keyboard instead!

We’re half-joking of course, but the Roccat Vulcan II Max is genuinely among the most beautiful-looking arrays yet produced. The lighting behind the keys looks phenomenal, and that’s without even mentioning that detachable and illuminating silicone wrist-rest…

One-of-a-kind light show

Those lights on the full-size Vulcan II Max are elevated by its flat and shallow keycaps. There are also 24 keys on the slender, lightweight chassis which have switches that are lit up when used by the dual-LEDs.

Besides its one-of-a-kind light show, the Vulcan II Max also delivers some impressive features. These include the dedicated media keys, the clickable volume knob, and the ability to set the Titan II Optical switches to either linear or tactile settings.

Slippery keycaps

Still, the Vulcan II Max does unfortunately have a few drawbacks. It isn’t wireless, so you’ll have to put up with a fixed cable with two USB connectors that can occasionally get in the way, and the ABS keycaps can sometimes feel slippery when you are in the heat of an online battle.

But if you are looking for a wired keyboard, don’t let those minor quibbles dissuade you too much from shelling out. It’s a superb choice that will wow both you and your friends with its interactive and adaptable Aimo lighting system that trumps the standard spectrum cycling. You can get it in white or black, and there’s even a mini-keyboard version, too.

Best overall value: GMMK PC Gaming Race

It might be a bit of a mouthful to say, but The Glorious Modular Mechanical Keyboard (GMMK) PC Gaming Race is arguably the best overall deal you can find on the market. The PC Gaming Race ticks a lot of boxes with its impressive design and array of features, while it should only set you back around $120.

The keyboard in question is modular and full-size — although there are 60 percent and TKL options on the market too — and it is cool to have the choice between white-on-silver and black-on-black versions. You might like the former better, as it has more of a novelty in a black-dominated market, but that is down to personal preference.

Braided USB Cable

Anyway, the modular nature of the PC Gaming Race means you can conveniently hot-swap its key switches. It is nice to type with, thanks largely to its ABS doubleshot keycaps and Gateron Brown tactile switches, so it can comfortably be used for work as well as play.

The PC Gaming Race is not wireless: it comes with a braided USB cable that has three-way routing underneath the keyboard. Under there you will also find a keycap puller, should you need to change keycaps or clean underneath. It features beveled edges and a metal top which give it an impressive look.

Highly customizable

One of the major plus points of the PC Gaming Race is its highly customizable nature. Indeed, you can choose between 13 Gateron or Kailh switches, or can select GMMK’s own Glorious Panda ones. You can even choose your own switch from the start and mull over four types of keycaps.

Less impressive is the cheap plastic bottom on the keyboard, and the lack of a volume dial or media controls is noticeable if you have become accustomed to having them. But overall, the PC Gaming Race is packed with all the essential features, is great value, and is fun to play with.

Best wireless TKL: Logitech G915 TKL

If you are on the market for a TenKeyLess (TKL) keyboard that is also wireless, then the Logitech G915 TKL could well be the right layout for you. This mighty fine gaming keyboard is arguably the best TKL, and although it is not cheap at around $230, it does the job well.

In actual fact, you can do your job with it — if your profession involves lots of typing, that is. Yes, the G915 TKL features low-profile GL tactile switches and a comfortable size that make it versatile for both gaming and those less-exciting occupational tasks.

Easy-to-use G Hub software

Also in the plus column for the G915 TKL is its per-key RGB lighting, which can be programmed and customized using the company’s own G Hub software. Testers found the app to be pleasingly straightforward to navigate.

And thumbs-up to the fact you can switch between different custom profiles without even having to open it each time you use the keyboard. That’s a neat little feature that pushes the G915 TKL ahead of much of its competition.

Lag-averse wireless

The G915 TKL boasts solid battery life and can be connected to both a wireless router and via Bluetooth. It is available with either GL Clicky or GL Linear switches, and you can choose between a model featuring carbon-with-black keycaps, or alternatively a silver-with-white-caps one.

Most reviewers didn’t find much to dislike about it, although the macro functionality is reportedly kind of limited. Also, it could be a bit cheaper! But overall, if you are willing to pay for it, the G915 TKL delivers the goods, and its wireless functionality is so good, that dreaded lag will be a thing of the past.

Best competitive wireless keyboard: SteelSeries Apex Pro TKL Wireless

If you are — or aspire to become — a serious, competitive gamer who plays for a living rather than for fun, with a legion of subscribers on Twitch or YouTube, then the SteelSeries Apex Pro TKL Wireless is for you. Yes, this elite level keyboard is seemingly aimed towards the big dogs in gaming, not the beginners.

For starters there’s the lofty price tag, which is likely to put off those just starting out. You’ll need around $250 or more to pick up one of these bad boys new: that’s a serious investment that generally only career gamers can easily justify.

Hyper-magnetic switches

So, let’s get to the specifications of this awesome keyboard. The Apex Pro TKL Wireless is a relatively compact TKL beast featuring OmniPoint 2.0 switches that are among the best in the business.

Indeed, the adjustable, hyper-magnetic switches in the keyboard are super-fast and reliable, helping you gain a competitive edge in the heat of online battle, where every millisecond can be of the essence. The keyboard is also fully customizable, so you can set it up to your liking.

World’s fastest keyboard

What else? Well, SteelSeries boasts that its Apex Pro TKL Wireless is the “world’s fastest keyboard” with “20x faster actuation and 11x faster response than traditional mechanical keyboards.” While the layman can’t fully verify the truth of this claim, it is super-fast and responsive, if not so good for non-gaming tasks.

Elsewhere, you’ll really like the OLED screen, which is easy to use and allows you to set up multiple, easily identifiable profiles you use for different games. The PBT keycaps are lovely too, but some users have reportedly had problems with the sleep mode deactivating itself on numerous occasions. But there’s little wrong with the Apex Pro TKL Wireless, so if you play competitively, don’t want a completely full-size keyboard, and have come into a bit of money, go ahead and purchase!

Best all-rounder: Razer Huntsman v2

What can be said about the Razer Huntsman v2? Not much, except that out of all the ones tested in compiling this article, it had the biggest soft spot reserved for it. And that’s saying something given the impressive attributes of the other keyboards listed above.

What’s so great about it? Well, to begin with, it is sturdily-built and looks awesome, with a large detachable wrist-rest, and that’s important. But more than that, the Huntsman v2 delivers the goods on a technical level, and much more besides.

Big on performance

Yes, the Huntsman V2 is big on performance, and boasts incredible responsiveness and close-to-zero input latency. The Razer optical switches with which it comes armed deliver reliable and super-fast actuation, so you’ll never miss a beat.

Those switches provide crisp, tactile feedback and the Huntsman V2 boasts a true 8,000Hz polling rate. These elements combined mean you’ll suffer next-to-no lag, a gamer’s biggest enemy. The keyboard also provides updated and welcome sound-dampening technology.

Fastest Razer gaming keyboard

The Huntsman v2 features attractive underglow lighting that marks it out as a high-end gaming keyboard. Testers reported that keystrokes felt satisfyingly light and snappy when playing, which was very welcome in the heat of online battle.

The programmable media controls are a welcome feature, with Razer’s Synapse software pretty easy to use and modify. The Huntsman v2 is the fastest gaming keyboard that Razer offers, and should be snapped up by those looking to treat themselves and gain a competitive edge in online gaming.
